Bible Reading of the day.
Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 10,1-9. After this the Lord appointed seventy (-two) others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. He said to them, "The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest. Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves. Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way.Into whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this household.' If a peaceful person lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you, for the laborer deserves his payment. Do not move about from one house to another. Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you, cure the sick in it and say to them, 'The kingdom of God is at hand for you.'

Parochial and Plain Sermons, vol.3, no.22: «The Good Part of Mary»
Saint Luke the Evangelist, «minister of the Word» (Lk 1,2)
Every word of Christ is good; it has its mission and its purpose, and does not fall to the ground. It cannot be that He should ever speak transitory words, who is Himself the very Word of God, uttering, at His good pleasure, the deep counsels and the holy will of Him who is invisible. Every word of Christ is good; and did we receive a record of His sayings even from ordinary men, yet we might be sure as to whatever was thus preserved - whether spoken to disciple or enemy, whether by way of warning, advice, rebuke, comfort, argument, or condemnation - that nothing had a merely occasional meaning, a partial scope and confined range...
To the contrary, all His sacred speeches, though clothed in a temporary garb, and serving an immediate end, and difficult, in consequence, to disengage from what is temporary in them and immediate, yet all have their force in every age, abiding in the Church on earth, "enduring for ever in heaven," (cf Mt 24,35; Heb 10,34) and running on into eternity. They are our rule, "holy, just, and good," "the lantern of our feet and the light of our paths," (Ps 119[118], 105) in this very day as fully and as intimately as when they were first pronounced. And if this had been so, though mere human diligence had gathered up the crumbs from His table, much more sure are we of the value of what is recorded of Him, receiving it, as we do, not from man, but from God (1Thes 2,13). The Holy Ghost, who came to glorify Christ, and inspired the Evangelists to write, did not trace out for us a barren Gospel; but doubtless, praised be His name, selected and saved for us those words which were to have an especial usefulness in after times, those words which might be the Church's law, in faith, conduct, and discipline; not a law written in tables of stone, (Ex 24,12) but a law of faith and love, of the spirit, not of the letter (Rom 7,6); a law for willing hearts, which could bear to "live by every word," however faint and low, "which proceeded from His mouth," (Dt 8,3; Mt 4,4).

Rice: Washington Would Never Allow Syria to Intervene Militarily in Lebanon
Naharnet/U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Friday pledged that Washington would "never permit Syria to intervene militarily in Lebanon."
Rice, in an interview with the Arabiya television network, said the message has been "clearly" relayed to the Syrians.
The recent military attacks in Tripoli and Damascus should not be used as a pretext to justify Syrian military intervention in Lebanon, she said.
Lebanon, Rice added, would not be able to "tolerate" such an intervention in light of "signals" by Syria that it is interested in a "different" relationship with Beirut.
The chief of U.S. diplomacy said she had discussed with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem the topics of border demarcation and border control with Lebanon. She also discussed with Muallem the need to halt the flow of foreign fighters to Iraq. "Syria should clarify to us on which side it stands," she stressed.

Israeli Journalist: Mughniyeh's killing Was Needed to Restore Faith in Israel's Intelligence Services
Naharnet/An Israeli investigative reporter comes close to saying outright in a new book that Israel was responsible for the assassination of Hizbullah commander Imad Mughniyeh in a car bombing in Damascus last February. "Although Israel has denied responsibility for the assassination, the Mughniyeh hit was exactly the kind of thing needed to restore the country's faith in, and more importantly the enemy's fear of, Israel's intelligence services," Ronen Bergman says in his book "The Secret War with Iran." Bergman then quotes an Israeli intelligence official, who recalls the exact model of the vehicle Mughniyeh was driving when he was killed. "Pity about that new Pajero," he said. "The Secret War With Iran: The 30-year Clandestine Struggle Against the World's Most Dangerous Terrorist Power" deals with the covert clash between Iran and the West from 1978–2008.
Through several tales, the analyst for Israel's newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, says Israel and the U.S. are intensifying a clandestine war against Iran that has run hot and cold since the Islamic Revolution in 1979 but has grown more urgent as Tehran races to obtain an atomic bomb. Bergman told the Israeli Haaretz daily recently that the past year has witnessed positive developments. "The killing of Hizbullah terror mastermind Imad Mughniyeh last winter, the explosion at a Syrian chemical-weapons facility in July 2007 and the bombing of its nuclear plant last September, are a few examples that may suggest that Western and Israeli intelligence are recovering their ability vis-a-vis Iran and its proxies," he said.(AP file photo shows women carrying Hizbullah yellow flags and Palestinian flags along with pictures of Mughniyeh, right, and Iran's Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, center) Beirut, 18 Oct 08, 08:39

Washington Gives Lebanese Armed Forces More Equipment
Naharnet/U.S. Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Eric Edelman signed an agreement in Beirut on Friday to give the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) additional military equipment. Edelman met with Premier Fouad Saniora and Army Commander Jean Qahwaji. During Edelman's meeting with Qahwaji, "the two signed an agreement for the LAF to receive additional automatic grenade launchers. These weapons are part of the $410 million in grants that the U.S. government has provided to the LAF," the U.S. embassy said in a statement. "Building on previous discussions between Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, President Michel Suleiman, and Minister of Defense Elias Murr, Ambassador Edelman and the Lebanese officials followed up on the recent joint military commission discussions designed to strengthen the U.S.-Lebanon bilateral defense relationship," the statement said. "Since 2006, the United States has committed more than $410 million in security assistance to the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), and the United States will continue to provide equipment and training to the LAF," the embassy added.
In his meetings, Edelman stressed continued U.S. commitment to enhance the LAF's capabilities. Beirut, 18 Oct 08, 05:16

Iran denied Security Council seat
Iranian bid to secure non-permanent Security Council seat denied by huge majority; Japan wins Asian seat with 158 votes, compared to Iran's 32. Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni lauds UN's decision
Associated Press Published: 10.17.08, 19:48 / Israel News
Iran and Iceland failed Friday to win non-permanent seats on the United Nations Security council.
Austria and Turkey beat Iceland in the battle for the two non-permanent European seats on the 15-member council in voting at a meeting of the UN General Assembly while Iran lost out to Japan for the council's Asian seat. The other two seats went to Mexico, which will represent Latin America, and Uganda, which will represent Africa; both ran unopposed. Kadima Chairman Tzipi Livni lauded the decision, congratulated Japan for being elected, and added that "Iran's very candidacy was unthinkable."
Livni added that the UN averted disgrace by preventing Iran from joining the Security Council, stressing that international activity vis-à-vis Iran and the threat it represents "must continue at all levels and with greater force."
Iran receives 32 votes
General Assembly President Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann said after the balloting that Austria received 133 votes, Turkey 151 votes, Japan 158 votes, Uganda 181 votes and Mexico 185.
Iran received only 32 votes from the U.N. members, Iceland, which had been considered by many to be a strong candidate until the recent economic crisis, received only 87 votes.
The five new non-permanent members of the council will serve two-year terms.
Ten of the council's 15 seats are filled by the regional groups for two-year stretches. The other five are occupied by its veto-wielding permanent members: Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States. The five countries elected to the Council will take their seats on Jan. 1, 2009, replacing Belgium, Indonesia, Italy, Panama and South Africa. The five countries elected last year - Libya, Vietnam, Burkina Faso, Costa Rica and Croatia - will remain on the Council until Jan. 1, 2010.*Attila Somfalvi contributed to the story

Hizbullah: UN pressure won’t suppress resistance
Nasrallah's deputy slams report claiming Shiite group threatens regional security, says ' those trying to come between Lebanon and the resistance will lose'
Roee Nahmias Published: 10.18.08, 14:03 / Israel News Hizbullah Deputy Secretary-General Sheikh Naim Qassem denounced on Saturday a report issued by UN Middle East envoy Terje Roed-Larsen describing the Shiite group as a threat to Middle East security.
Speaking in Beirut's Dahiya quarter, a Hizbullah stronghold, Qassem said it was Israel that posed a threat to the region, adding "those who believe they can suppress our resistance by pressuring us are mistaken.
"We must address Terje Roed-Larsen's report, which claims that the resistance jeopardizes Lebanon's regime and security," he said.
The sheikh referred to Roed-Larsen's report as "incitement" and called the UN envoy "one of the last remnants of Israel's defeat", adding that "those trying to come between (Lebanon) and the resistance will lose.
"Roed-Larsen condemned Israeli violations of Lebanese airspace. Is Israel only violating (Lebanon's airspace), or is it attacking, destroying and kidnapping?" Qassem said. He continued to say that "Israel, which annihilated the Palestinians in 1948 and killed (12-year-old) Muhammad al-Dura in front of the world's media outlets, is the real danger to our region.
"As long as Israel is the enemy situated along our border, we will prevent it from implementing its plans," the sheikh said.

Police Officer, Two Civilians Arrested in Kfar Shouba for Possessing Explosives

Naharnet/A police officer and two civilians were accused by a military judge on Friday of possessing explosives with the intent to commit terrorist acts, a judicial official said."The three men were caught in possession of vials containing unknown substances which have been sent to a laboratory to determine their contents," a judicial official told AFP on condition of anonymity. The officials say the three were arrested this week after security troops confiscated weapons and vessels containing a liquid possibly used to activate explosives.
"The military judge has accused them of possession of illegal substances and has ordered their detention," the official said.
The three were arrested in the Kfar Shouba district in southern Lebanon, local press reported, though the date of their arrests was not specified.
"The accused are not linked to the attacks that recently took place in Tripoli," the official said referring to two bus bombings that targeted Lebanese soldiers leaving over two dozen people killed.
Lebanese authorities announced last Sunday the arrest of a "terrorist network" thought to be behind three deadly attacks against the army since May.
The cell is thought to be linked to the al-Qaida inspired Fatah al-Islam group, that fought a deadly 15-week battle with the army in the Nahr al-Bared Palestinian refugee camp in northern Lebanon last year, a security official said.(AFP-AP) Beirut, 18 Oct 08, 08:42
