Biblical Reading For today

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 11,1-4.
He was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples."He said to them, "When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread and forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us, and do not subject us to the final test."

Prodi pledges support for Lebanon
PM in Beirut says stability here is crucial for Mideast
(ANSA) - Beirut, October 11 - Italian Premier Romano Prodi on Wednesday pledged his country's support for the reconstruction of Lebanon and the government of Prime Minister Fouad Siniora .
Prodi, who met Siniora in Beirut, said at a joint press conference that a "strong and stable" Lebanon was crucial for stability in the Middle East. He said Rome would try to ensure the international community helped the country fully recover from the 34-day war which ravaged its southern part this summer .
Lebanon suffered some $3.6 billion in damages as Israeli forces invaded to battle against the forces of Hezbollah, a Shi'ite Muslim guerrilla group close to Iran and Syria ."Now we must work for the reconstruction of Lebanon so that the country can be strong and stable again. The stability of Lebanon is the instrument through which to guarantee the stability of the entire area," Prodi said. "Italy will try to guarantee not only its own support but also that of the European and international community," he added In an article published in a Lebanese newspaper, Prodi stressed his political support for Siniora, who is under pressure to reshuffle his cabinet to give Hezbollah a stronger voice . "I have come to Beirut today to confirm Italy's firm support for Lebanon and the government of Prime Minister Siniora," he said .Italy has agreed to send up to 3,000 soldiers to Lebanon, making it the biggest contributor to the UN's force there. It is scheduled to take over command of the UNIFIL multinational force in February 2007 . Siniora thanked Prodi and Italy for showing its support "in a moment of need". He also said Prodi had played an important role in laying the groundwork for the UN resolution which effectively ended the war in Lebanon on August 14 .Under UN Security Council resolution 1701, the multinational force is tasked with helping some 15,000 Lebanese troops enforce a truce in the war which came into effect on August 14 . Prodi was scheduled to visit with Italian troops deployed in the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission later on Wednesday and then board the Italian navy ship Garibaldi, which is docked in Beirut harbor . Prodi said that during his talks with Siniora he had raised the issue of the two Israeli soliders whose capture by Hezbollah in July sparked the war . "Their release would help solve the security problems in the area," he said . The soldiers are still in Hezbollah's hands and the group has refused to release them except in exchange for Lebanese prisoners in Israeli jails . While in the Lebanese capital, Prodi was also scheduled to inaugurate the new Italian embassy .

Italian Premier Says Lebanon's Stability is Key to that of the Region
Naharnet/Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi gave his moral support to war-ravaged Lebanon on Wednesday, saying the country's stability was key to that of the Middle East. Prodi, who arrived in Lebanon late Tuesday, held separate talks with Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Saniora and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri on the U.N. peacekeeping operation in south Lebanon, to which Italy is the leading contributor nation. The force has been expanded after the July 12-Aug.14 conflict between Israel and Hizbullah that killed about 1,000 people. "The stability of Lebanon is the instrument toward stability of the area," Prodi told reporters after his talks with Saniora. Prodi pledged to secure a prisoners' swap with Israel. "We discussed this issue... and I said that helping to resolve this issue will help restore peace," Prodi said. "But I cannot say more," he added. Secretary General Kofi Annan has appointed a secret envoy to negotiate the release of the Israeli soldiers, which is required under the U.N. cease-fire resolution.
Saniora said the talks with Prodi tackled "how Italy can help Lebanon in pushing Israel to stop violations" of Resolution 1701, including the near-daily violations of Lebanese airspace. Prodi said "we still have to go on in the process of withdrawal" -- in a reference to Lebanese complaints that Israeli forces are still occupying Lebanese parts of the border village of Ghajar. "There are still details ... and there are the Shabaa Farms" border territory also claimed by Lebanon, he said. Saniora said Prodi expressed readiness for an "active participation" in an international conference, due to be held by the end of the year, on which "we are putting lots of expectations to save Lebanon's economy." Italy, Lebanon's number-one trading partners, has "several ideas on how to participate in the early recovery of Lebanon," Saniora said. Lebanon is reeling under severe hardships since the Israeli offensive, which destroyed much of its infrastructure and devastated its economy. Material damage from the offensive has been estimated at least 3.6 billion dollars.
Saniora expressed appreciation for what he called Italy's "strong participation" in the U.N. operation. Italy is contributing 2,500 troops to the U.N.'s expanded peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon, assembled under the U.N. Security Council resolution that ended the conflict between Israel and Hizbullah. About 1,000 Italian troops already have been deployed in a coastal area from the Israeli border to the Litani River, about 30 kilometers north of the border. Italy is due to take over the command of the force from France in February 2007.
Prodi flew to the Italian contingent's base at Tibnine, 15 kilometers (10 miles) north of the Israel border, where he was briefed by officers He was to return to Beirut and call on an Italian warship anchored there before departing for Italy in the evening.
Under the U.N. resolution, 15,000 Lebanese troops are to control southern Lebanon along with an equal number of U.N. peacekeepers. The U.N. force currently numbers 5,200. The aim is to maintain a weapons-free zone from the border to the Litani.(AP-Naharnet-AFP)

Prodi visits Italian troops at head of Lebanon force
Naharnet: Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi arrives in Lebanon where his nation is leading the UN force overseeing peace in the south of the country. He was greeted at the airport in Beirut by his Lebanese counterpart, Fouad Sinioura. Prodi will have further talks with Sinioura and the parliamentary speaker, Nabbi Berri, today but there are no plans to meet President Emil Lahoud. Italy is contributing 2,500 troops to the expanded UN mission in Lebanon. They have been stationed in the south since last month. UN forces have taken over security control along with the Lebanese army following Israel's withdrawal from the region. They are overseeing the UN-brokered truce which ended the 34 day war between Israel and Hizbollah guerrillas.

Phares to Iraqi academics:  You need to address your American colleagues on democracy and US efforts

 Baghdad, October 10, 2006

In an interview with Radio Free Iraq, Middle East expert and Senior Fellow with the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, Dr Walid Phares appealed to Iraqi academics and intellectuals to address their colleagues in the United States and express their real aspirations on democracy and freedom. Phares, who taught political science and Midle East studies at several Florida Universities since 1992, and who also taught in Beirut in the 1980s said he is speaking in the name of many American academics from Middle Eastern or Arab descent who wish to see their colleagues in Iraq, from all communities and universities, breaking the silence and reaching out to the American public directly. "It is not enough, said Phares, that your President and politicians make official speeches in Iraq or the US on fighting Terrorism; you need to speak out and come to America and speak directly to the intellectuals and the public."

Phares told his radio audience in Iraq that "the debate about the future of the liberated country is taking place today in America, and the voice of the Iraqi people and intellectuals is unheard yet. Americans do not hear enough from you. The US has spent billions of dollars and about 3,000 soldiers were killed in the war to remove Saddam and fight the terrorists. Yet your voice is not loud enough in the American debate. People need to know from you that had Saddam stayed in power, the massacres against Shiite, Kurds and moderate Sunnis, in addition to other communities, would have resumed. It is not just important for you, as thinkers and teachers, to educate the American People on your positions but it is your duty to do so. A real dialogue must be opened between you and your counter parts in America."

Hezbollah: Unless Israel Leaves Shebaa Area We Will Drive Them Out

Hezbollah will resume its military campaign against Israel unless it withdraws from the disputed Shebaa farms area and other pockets of territory occupied during this summer’s 34-day war, Nabih Berri, speaker of the Lebanese parliament, has warned. “If Israel does not pull out we will have to drive them out,” said Berri, who acted as a link to the militant organization during this summer’s war with Israel, in an interview with the Guardian.Hezbollah will remain armed and fully operational in south Lebanon, despite the newly-deployed U.N. forces, until Israel withdraws from all Lebanese territory and ceases its ongoing air, sea and land violations, added Berri. “The UNIFIL presence will not hinder Hezbollah's defensive operations. The resistance doesn't need to fly its flags high to operate, it's a guerrilla movement; it operates among the people,” he said.

(October 11, 2006) The Washington-DC based human rights group, International Christian Concern (ICC) www.persecution.org has just learned that a group of about 50 Hindu militants in the northern sate of Uttaranchal have attacked two Christian workers during a Sunday worship service before accusing them of “hurting religious sentiments.”
Activists of the Bajrang Dal, the youth wing of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad or World Hindu Council, attacked the victims, identified only as Salvin and Simon from the Full Gospel Pentecost church, on September 24 when they were worshipping with 20 other Christians in their rented house in the Kasipur area.
After beating the two, the mob forcibly took them to the local police station and accused them of speaking against the Hindu religion, the Rev. Madhu Chandra, a leader of the All India Christian Council (AICC), told ICC.
The police first took the injured Christians to a hospital for first aid and then charged them under Section 298 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for hurting religious sentiments. The victims and local Christians, however, denied the allegation.
Later, Sariyu Prakash, a Christian lady from a local Methodist church and the victims’ neighbor, and Rakesh Kumar, the owner of the house where the Christians were holding worship service, lodged a counter complaint against the Bajrang Dal activists. The police registered the complaint for rioting, use of criminal force, house trespass, causing hurt and criminal intimidation under Sections 148, 351, 452, 323 and 506 of the IPC.
However, following the lodging of the counter complaint, Raju Agarwal, a former legislator of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), allegedly threatened the complainants that if they did not withdrew the complaint they would face dire consequences.
Agarwal also allegedly pressured Kumar to ask the Christians to vacate his house.
Local Christians are reportedly seeking to reach a compromise with the attackers due to the pressure and threats.
A police officer, G.C. Tamta, told AICC that no one had been arrested and that the police were investigating the allegations against both parties. The local court is yet to announce the first hearing of the cases, when the compromise is likely to take place.
Condemning the “barbaric crimes” against the Christian minority community by “religious fanatics,” the AICC demanded that the culprits be punished and members of the Christian community be protected as the law requires.
There are only 27,116 Christians in Uttaranchal, where the total population is more than 8.4 million.
The BJP held its national executive meeting in Uttaranchal last month. The next state assembly elections are due early 2007, for which the BJP has started preparations. The state is presently ruled by the Congress.
