Syrian Feats in Lebanon – Part VIII
By: General Michel Aoun

Our tragedy deepens each day. And how can it not be so when the newscasts in Beirut hurl their daily gushes of lies, slander, and incitement, and wreck havoc in the minds of people with doubts and machinations? And is it right that those in positions of responsibility have to protect themselves from the blackmail of the occupier who keeps thick files on them and forces them to adopt any political position that it wishes?

We need to be very keen and courageous to confront this Syrian conspiracy against the aspirations and resistance of the Lebanese people. Organized and sustained through the media, this conspiracy aims at dividing and sowing discord, and allows for itself that which is prohibited by God and man by stirring primal and hostile feelings that serve only to incite for strife.

The traitors want to return to the shelling of the UNESCO building in Beirut on March 14, 1989, thinking that their depravation on TV screens will convince viewers of the veracity of what they are saying. They keep drilling their version of the story to drown out the memory of the Lebanese people with a falsified sequence of events of what happened on that horrible day. How pitiful is this man – he is not even worthy of anger - who defends those who almost killed him with his family, in order for him to accuse those who defended him and his honour.

Perhaps a recall of the positions taken at the time is the best evidence to know the truth surrounding this crime. The following are the headlines in the An-Nahar on the day of the event and the day after:

14 March 1989:
Heavy random shelling over all Beirut
Aoun accuses Syria of a war of annihilation against Lebanon
15 March 1989
